DOVETAILING OF HISTORY AND MEMORY: RETHINKING THE FORM OF THE MONUMENT

Bereich

Since the 19th century, historical monuments were essential for the articulation of the national politics of memory in that they participated in the shaping of the selective historical narratives, obliterated aspects of the past deemed negative, and influenced collec- tive memory. Recently, numerous. monuments representing great events or individuals became a subject of public scrutiny. This tutorium addresses the recent surge of interest in the topic of monuments by connecting the art historical approach with the currents of history and the emerging memory studies (as well as museology and heritology). By aligning different perspectives, the tutorium connects the study of visual elements and artistic values of monuments with the question of their political dimension. Among the main issues which the tutorium confronts are: the elaboration of the significance of monuments derived from an inextricable web of the symbolic, the political, and the material, the definition of the traditional monument conceptions (achieved through the opposition with their contempo- rary adversaries), as well as the analysis of the political iconology of monuments. Given the broad methodological basis of the tutorium, it is well suitable for students from the following study programmes: Philosophy, History, Curatorial Studies, Art History, Master Ästhetik, and American Studies. However, the participation in the course is wel- comed by anyone who expresses interest in this subject. Moreover, the participation of artists from HfG and Städelschule is also encouraged.
